Tempting Proposal of an Argentine Digital Currency: Massa in the 2023 Presidential Debate

Presidential candidate of Unión por la Patria, Sergio Massa, made a noteworthy announcement during the presidential debate on Sunday, October 1, 2023, revealing his plans for the Argentine economy should he be elected president. Among his proposals, he surprised many by suggesting the creation of an "Argentine digital currency" and the launch of a new capital amnesty program.

Massa argued against dollarization, citing examples like Zimbabwe, El Salvador, and Ecuador that have adopted similar models. Instead, he proposed a digital currency backed by a network of distributed nodes throughout the country, ensuring security and cost reduction for users.

In addition to promoting transparency in transactions and financial inclusion, Massa emphasized the importance of strengthening the national currency through the development of resources such as gas pipelines and energy exports.

The candidate did not provide specific details about the implementation of the digital currency but assured that those who adopt it will enjoy tax reductions similar to those offered by the capital amnesty law currently under consideration in Congress.

Massa's proposal raises important questions about how the creation and adoption of this new digital currency would be carried out in Argentina and what its impact would be on the country's economy.
